Science teacher Jessica Tatum is the October recipient of the Golden Apple award. She was selected by September’s recipient Tony Kluemper.
“[Tatum] is someone you can always count on to help when you need help,” Kluemper said. “Students also really appreciate and talk kindly of her.”
Tatum believes in circular teaching and connecting ideas to topics previously discussed in class. She believes actively participating is key to understanding students and how they digest information.
“I like to see them actively listening, whether that is through expressions on their face or through their responses,” Tatum said. “I will also say something at the beginning of class and say it at the end of class to bring it back to their attention.”
Tatum has been at Starr’s Mill for five years and teaches gifted and regular chemistry. She also sponsors the American Sign Language club and Red Cross club.
Outside of school, Tatum enjoys watching her daughter perform in ballet and watching her son play soccer. She also volunteers at the McDonough Christian Church.
Tatum receives $100 from Farmers Insurance to spend on curriculum and instruction. She will also receive a free large pizza from Buck’s Pizza, a gift certificate to Lisa’s Creperie in Senoia, a goodie bag from Safelite Auto, and a free haircut from Main Hair in Peachtree City.
