Starr’s Mill welcomes English teacher Katie Tucker back to the Panther family. She has been teaching English for eight years now and she was an English substitute at Starr’s Mill for the past two years.
“If we enjoy something, we don’t have to muster up any willpower to do it,” Tucker said.
She taught English at Starr’s Mill from 2013 to 2017. She then decided to move to South Korea where she taught English at a public foreign language high school and an International Baccalaureate school over the course of four years.
After returning to America, she reached out to Starr’s Mill and received a position as a substitute teacher. Currently, she teaches 9th and 10th grade literature and composition in the same classroom she once occupied seven years ago.
Tucker feels inspired to teach not only because of her deep appreciation for literature, but also because her great grandmother was a literature professor, and she simply felt drawn to follow a similar path. More than anything, she wants to make learning fun and engaging to her students.
“Every student can learn, [and] our learning should be relevant to our lives,” Tucker said. “Education makes life better, and as much as possible learning should be fun.”
Outside of school, Katie enjoys playing tennis, reading, and writing. For the past three years she has been developing her own novel that is inspired by Dante’s “Inferno.”
