PBIS has announced its Student of the Month and Staff Member of the Month recipients for the month of September.
Spanish teacher Laura Alldredge nominated fellow Spanish teacher Marcela Sample because she organized and helped with scheduling the student exchange program.
“I nominated Sra. Sample for PBIS, because she displayed the quality of responsibility in planning and carrying out the entire exchange program. She has been the one who coordinated everything,” Alldredge said. “She coordinated with the company representative but also with the teachers. She helped coordinate all the matching of our students with their students. She was the person who did the bulk of that work and made sure that the students all got goodie bags.”
Other staff members nominated include English teachers Terence Fitzgerald and Whitney Shoemaker, athletic department secretary, Sarah Harmond, health and physical education teacher Peyton Dean, math teachers Julie Spencer and Michelle Genovese, special education paraprofessional Sirrel Young, child education teacher Hope Via, assistant principal Brandi Meeks, and assistant band director Bert Groover.
Science teacher Nicholas Gillies nominated junior Ellie Lasiter because she sets an example for the class. Lasiter does her warmup, completes all her work on time, and participates in class discussions.
“She always has items ready to go and starts work on the warm up question without having to be asked,” Gillies said. “She holds herself accountable for her learning and has disciplined habits that ensures she will be successful in a challenging course.”
Other upperclassmen include seniors Heaven Johnson, Drew Richardson, and Justin Sparks, and juniors Ella Griswold, Evan Fish, Joshua Lawson, and Jadynn Martin.
English teacher Terence Fitzgerald nominated sophomore Samya Barber because she helped out a student who was struggling with an assignment in the computer lab.
“She cares about not just her own education, but the education of those around her,” Fitzgerald said. “She consistently advocates for others in not just her classroom but others through her role in the Black Student Association.”
Other underclassmen nominated include sophomores Naza Bueno, Tyler Cape, Emme Johnson, and Emma Newell, and freshmen Caroline Derham, Kiley Groft, Jack Sewell, Catherine Simmons, and William Thomas.
Once a month Elise Heaton, the assistant principal in charge of PBIS, sends out a link for staff members to nominate students and teachers on their good behavior. The PBIS committee, composed of Freeman, a PBIS coach, and other faculty and staff, voted on the PBIS staff and students of the month.
“The PBIS program at Starr’s Mill helps us focus on the three core values that we want all of our students and staff to exhibit on a daily basis: respect, accountability, and responsibility,” assistant principal Elise Heaton. “So with PBIS and focusing on these three things we can celebrate the positive things going on in our building instead of the negative things, which will hopefully encourage others to show those positive values as well.”
