Campaigns bring out wit, creativity and uniqueness
May 5, 2015
The annual campaign for class officers brings out the candidates’ creativity as they vie for votes. Whether they are running for president, vice president, secretary or treasurer, their posters must be catchy and memorable, and it doesn’t hurt to be hilarious.
For example, junior Dhruva Jandhyala ran for vice president for the Class of 2016 and used self-deprecating humor in his posters. They read, “I’m not the most athletic guy . . . I’m not the funniest guy . . . I don’t have the grades . . . Please let me have this one thing.”
Funny, but he didn’t win.
Junior Erin Treon ran for treasurer for the Class of 2016. A few of her campaign posters made references to Disney’s “Frozen” with one poster reading, “Some people are worth voting for,” poking fun at one of the character Olaf’s lines.
“I wanted to be involved more in my senior year than I was in my junior year, and I felt that executive board was the way to go,” Treon said.
Sophomore Lauren Scott, one of the candidates who ran for treasurer for the Class of 2017, also had unique posters. Hers made references to celebrity socialite Kim Kardashian and the teen drama TV show “Gossip Girl.”
“My strategy was to make the posters relatable and funny,” Scott said. “I really wanted people to see them and connect.”
Sophomore Caroline Dillon ran for vice president for the Class of 2017. Dillon said she believed she would be an asset to the student government and as vice president, she hoped “to get more of the student body involved and come to more meetings and events.” Dillon also thinks that her class needs more structure and she could provide that. “I want to get more people involved by getting them to help with school events,” Dillon said.
After a couple rounds of voting, the results are in. The Class of 2018 elected co-presidents Cade Donaldson and Bridgette Davenport; vice president Claire Goins; treasurer Caroline Broderick; and secretary Katie Shockley.
For the Class of 2017, the officers are president Yuri-Grace Ohashi; vice presidents Duncan Strnad and Caroline Dillon; treasurer Angela Ricketts; and secretary Aelise Gagliano.
For the Class of 2016, the officers are co-presidents Maria Curry and Cole Evans; vice presidents Chandler Houck and Tyler Jeffares; treasurers Dominique Dawson and Connor Morgan; and secretary Sydney Mayson.
